COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

YEAR I

A.  Introduction to Lay Ministry:   An introduction to the Lay Ministry Program as well as Lay Ministry in general. It will look at Lay Ministry springing from our Baptism and gives the participant a sense of being called, gifted and sent.  It will cover Catholic Christian anthropology, a Catholic understanding of God, revelation, salvation, religion, theology, and liturgy. (5 Hours)

B.  Introduction to Scripture:  This survey course is an historical, theological and literary introduction to the Bible, exploring revelation, inspiration and literary forms.  A study of Hebrew Scripture will deal with the life vision of the Israelites and how that vision can direct the lives of Christians today.   An introduction to the New Testament will include historical, theological background and the content of the Synoptic, as well as an overview of the radical difference between John's Gospel and the Synoptic accounts in their respective approaches to the Jesus event.  (20 Hours)

C.  Christology:  This course will include a look at the geographical, cultural and political surroundings of Jesus' life; a response to the question, "Who is Jesus to me?"; consideration of the human characteristics of Jesus; and a study of the infancy, passion and resurrection narratives.  (15 Hours)

D.  Church History:  This course will explore the evolution of the Church through the centuries; the challenge of Vatican II in order to consider some of the contemporary questions and their implications for the Church today; and models of the Church.  (20 Hours)

YEAR II

A.  Social Ministry:  This course will focus on the Church's social teachings and examine how the work of justice and peace is a clear mandate of the Gospel.    (10 Hours)

B.  Christian Morality:  This course will explore the relationship between faith and morality.  The roles of Scripture, tradition and the teaching Church in moral theology will
be discussed.  Consideration will be given to the diverse and sometimes conflicting information regarding various moral issues.  (10 Hours)

C.  Liturgy and Sacraments:  The history, nature and varieties of worship within the Roman Catholic experience will be reviewed.  Principles for good liturgical practice and the rites for the administration of the sacraments will provide a practical background to exploring the underlying theology of the sacraments  (10 Hours)

D.  Vatican II Documents:  This course is a study of the spirit behind the Second Vatican Council together with a treatment of the theology behind the 16 documents promulgated by that Council, as well as an overview of the documents themselves.  (10 Hours)

E. Spirituality:  This is an introduction to spirituality in general, offering an overview of a holistic approach to spirituality, paying particular attention to the spirituality of the lay person.  It will look at different spiritual approaches in the Catholic tradition as well as different prayers and prayer styles. (5 Hours)

F. Introduction to Ministry:  The course is multi-dimensional  and includes "nuts and bolts" assisting the participants to respond to one's call to ministry by virtue of their Baptism. (15 Hours)

FOCUS YEAR

The Focus Year is designed for persons interested in specific ministries and is not required of all participants.  The curriculum for the Focus Year will be tailored to the particular ministries of Young Adult/Campus Ministry, Youth Ministry or Ministry in Faith Formation.

MEETING TIME

Classes meet on designated Saturdays from 9:30 A.M. till 4:00 P.M. with an hour for lunch.  Participants are responsible for their own lunch.  Sessions average about one per month within the academic year.


SITES

Sessions for the 2008-2010 program will be held at four sites throughout the diocese:

A. Bryson City (St. Joseph Catholic Church)

B. Charlotte (St. Gabriel Catholic Church Ministry Center)

C. Greensboro  (St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church)

D.  Lenoir (St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church)


REQUIREMENTS

Participants are expected to attend and participate in all classes.  The schedule usually allows for missed classes to be made up at another site.  Outside readings and some written assignments are also required.

COSTS

A $35.00 registration fee is required at the beginning of each year.  Tuition is $150.00 per year.  It may be paid at each session or in full at the beginning of each year.  Participants are expected to pay for any missed classes.  The cost of books varies.
